How to Get a California Fishing License Online (Step by Step)
California sport fishing licenses are purchased through the official CDFW Online License Sales and Services system. Here is how the process works:
- Go to licenses.wildlife.ca.gov/internetsales — the official CDFW Online License Sales and Services site.
- Create or log in to your account — enter your California ID or driver’s license number and personal information. A California resident is any person who has resided continuously in California for six months or more immediately before applying. Active military and Job Corps members also qualify as residents.
- Select your license type — resident, nonresident, 365-day, or short-term. Add any required validations or report cards.
- Pay by debit or credit card — all licenses are nonrefundable once purchased.
- Download or display your license — California accepts digital sport fishing licenses displayed on the CDFW License App or your phone. Your license must be in your immediate possession while fishing.
You can also enroll in Auto-Renewal when purchasing online. CDFW will automatically renew and mail your license approximately 45 days before expiration, with email notifications 28 and 14 days before the renewal occurs.

California Saltwater, Ocean, and Pier Fishing
California does not require a separate saltwater fishing license. A standard California sport fishing license covers both freshwater and saltwater fishing — inland lakes, rivers, bays, piers, surf, rock, and ocean fishing throughout the state.
Public pier fishing exemption: A sport fishing license is not required to fish from a qualifying public pier in ocean waters. The pier must be publicly owned, have unrestricted free public access, and be built primarily for angling access to ocean waters. All other regulations still apply from public piers — bag limits, size limits, seasons, and applicable report cards are still required including for sturgeon and spiny lobster.
Colorado River: No special validation is required to fish the California-Arizona border portion of the Colorado River. A valid California or Arizona sport fishing license is sufficient.

Out-of-state anglers fishing in California must purchase a nonresident sport fishing license through CDFW. California draws nonresident anglers for coastal waters, Lake Tahoe, the Sacramento River system, the Delta, and major reservoirs statewide.

California Fishing License Expiration
California sport fishing licenses are valid for 365 days from the date of purchase — not a fixed calendar year. A license purchased July 21, 2026 is valid through July 20, 2027. Because the license is a rolling 365-day period, there is no bad time to buy — you always get a full year.

If you need another copy of your California fishing license, a Duplicate Sport Fishing License ($14.30) can be purchased through the CDFW system online, at any authorized license agent, or at a CDFW License Sales Office.
Note: Licenses should never be heat laminated — this destroys them. A discolored license is still valid as long as the text and signature remain readable. Saving a PDF when you purchase is the easiest backup.

California Free Fishing Days 2026
California offers two Free Fishing Days each year when anyone can fish without a sport fishing license. All other fishing regulations still apply — bag limits, size limits, gear restrictions, and stream closures remain in effect.

Report cards are still required on Free Fishing Days for anglers fishing for steelhead, sturgeon, spiny lobster, or North Coast salmon. This applies to everyone — including children under 16 and pier anglers.

Before buying
- Don’t confuse the 365-day rolling license with a calendar-year license — your expiration date is 365 days from your purchase date, not December 31
- Don’t forget the Ocean Enhancement Validation ($7.30) if you plan to fish ocean waters south of Point Arguello on a 365-day or 10-day license
- Don’t assume California’s senior license is available to all seniors — it’s only for low-income California residents age 65+ receiving SSI or CAPI; all other seniors pay the full $64.54 resident rate
- Don’t buy a license and skip the applicable report cards — steelhead, sturgeon, North Coast salmon, and spiny lobster each require their own report card
